Because of my relocation specialty, I frequently work with clients who are just not ready to purchase a home without first seeing if the area is what they thought it would be and get used to the city before deciding which neighborhood (or city) they would like to live in. This can take months or even a year. So I find myself constantly looking for suitable rentals. I call it the “soft place to land”. It is getting easier to find a 6 month rental arrangement but trying to find a furnished month-to-month rental is nearly impossible. Corporate Housing is pretty much nonexistent. There are a few apartment complexes or motels trying to accommodate this newly emerging housing need, but they are typically very modest furnishings and quite expensive given what they are.
If you find yourself looking for this type of housing, I would suggest a few resources.
Padden Creek Apartments is located in the Fairhaven District. This area is the most popular area to live in and is close to Fairhaven Park, the interurban trail system and a short walk to the village of Fairhaven, Haggen grocery store, city buses, and Bellingham Bay. One could get along very well without a vehicle in this location. Padden Creek Apartments requires a minimum 6 month lease. 1, 2 and 3 bedrooms ranging from $700-$1000 a month. They offer an indoor pool, sauna and exercise equipment. It is run by a couple from South Africa and every unit has a wood burning fireplace. Cats are accepted with deposit and there is a designated building for dogs. If interested, there is usually a bit of a waiting list-but not always. The contact is: Tina or Phyllis. Canterbury Court & Sunset Pond Apartments have a few furnished apartments available. Both are surrounded by wetlands and ponds which make an attractive view from some of the units. They offer 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments. Unfurnished ones range from approx. $650-$1100 month. Both locations are close to shopping and have short term lease options.

Brampton Court Apartments offer short term rental options and are in the heart of the city of Bellingham. They have 1, 2 and 3 bedroom units. Some have a view of the golf course and offer amenities such as: indoor spa and fitness center, outdoor pool and are pet friendly (somewhat). http://www.bramptoncourt.com 360.647.5600.
Barkley Trails Apartments are located on Barkley Boulevard in the heart of Bellingham. 1 bedrooms are $629, 2 bedrooms are $849 and 3 bedrooms are $1064. Three major shopping districts, trail system, w/d in each unit and covered parking. I do not think they offer anything less than 9 month leases. http://www.craigslist.org/ is an excellent resource for finding a rental! I use it all the time.
www.Bellinghamherald.com is the local newspaper for all of Whatcom County. You can find individuals who are renting their properties and also identify the property managers in the area.
