Bellingham Housing Market

June 19th, 2008
Bellingham real estate currently is down in value 9% from last year and sales are down to just under 25%. Realtors are leaving the business as a result of slower sales. The older realtors (those who have been in the market for say 10 or more years) tell me this is really a more normal sales environment for Bellingham, The rush to buy a home days of 2004-2005 made some newer agents think this was an easy way to earn a living.

Sellers are becoming restless when homes don't sell within 30 days and are now getting re-educated as to the realities of a sluggish housing market. Realtors in the Bellingham area are getting discouraged as well.

Fairhaven in a state of flux

June 4th, 2008
Fairhaven, located in Bellingham, Washington has to make some tough decisions. I am familiar with the non-growth issues Fairhaven is continually dealing with. No Chuckanut Ridge Development signs are visible everywhere for example. The community of Fairhaven has a valid concern about over populating an very small segment of Bellingham. I saw some of this earlier in Laguna Beach California. Laguna set some strict standards such as: no neon signs within the city (just wooden signs allowed), a green belt set permanently aside with no developments allowed in the foothills, and other well though out growth planning. As this area exploded (this was over

Northwest Wine Country

June 3rd, 2008
The Yakima and Columbia Valleys may be the newest vineyard areas in the country. There are many varieties of wineries ranging from metal sheds with an elegant door to new adobe buildings complete with overnight suites and elegant restaurants. A small group of us ventured over the pass one weekend to check it out. From Bellingham it took us just 3 ½ hours to get to Yakima . Driving from Seattle, it would take under 2 hours. There are a few good overnight accommodations right in Yakima that I would recommend. The Hilton Garden Inn is the newest in the city with a full restaurant. The staff is friendly and the rooms are
