Whidbey Island received it's name from Captain Vancouver in June 1792.  He named the island after Joseph Whidbey who discovered the thin passageway, which is now called Deception Pass, that clearly identified the newly discovered piece of land as an island.  The various communities on Whidbey are quite distinctive and people are drawn to this place for different reasons - to expore or to relax, to work or to retire, and some to live their dream.  The chamber guide book says you should think of Whidbey as cut from a beautiful piece of velvet.  It can look very different depending on which direction you view it!

Deception Pass Visitor Center  -  Deception Pass is one of the top ten things you must visit when coming to the Northwest.  The bridge at Deception Pass was a Public Works Project build in 1935 and an interesting sideline is that it cost more to paint the bridge in 1983 than it originally cost to build.  It is a favorite spot for photographers.

Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve  -  This Reserve is unlike traditional National Park Service areas.  It is the product of a partnership between the Town of Coupeville, Island County, the State of Washington and the National Park Service.  It is the first National Park Service unit in the nation to be managed by a trust board.   360-678-6084
